French for 'like boys'... meet Comme des Garçons by Rei Kawakubo
There are some designers where you just don't understand. Is it clothing? If so how does one wear it? Where does one wear it? The Fantasy is super real or is it? Rei Kawakubo's created a universe within fashion that is more just a runway. If you've seen the Play Red Love Heart Logo, Dover Street Market or Fragrance you'll realise how Kawakubo has developed a brand which was trashed by French media into a multimillion-dollar brand based on ideas of vision than the bottom dollar. Growing up in Tokyo and studying fine arts, Kawakubo didn't plan to be a fashion designer. She worked in advertising and styling until 1969 when she started making clothes under the label Comme des Garçons. The brand has over 10 lines of product from Womens, Mens, Accessories and Fragrance. The brand is known for its anti-fashion nature, with Kawakubo's desire to create difference she designs everything for each category of product. If anything Kawakubo's position on the end of the artist fashion scale gives the universe of fashion a glass ceiling higher than another designer would reach. Encouraging hyper imagination and challenging norms whether it be gender, fabrication or pieces. Which is probably why the brand has collaborated with a multitude of brands from Louis Vuitton, H&M, Nike and Moncler. Rei Kawakubo's Comme des Garçons isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's one of those that'll be on the shelf for time to come.
