CURRENTLY: Jet lagged

I am Jet Lagged
It takes around 5 hours to fly from Melbourne out of Australia to Asia, Europe, etc... This makes average travel times between 7-24 hours... which is 'great' when you have a fear of flying... Another downside to long haul travel is that it can be insanely taxing on your bodily functions. Whenever I fly long haul my body tends to adjust well when I arrive at my destination. However, upon my return, I hit a wall; my Mind, Body and Essence become out of sync. In the past three weeks, I traveled to Europe, visited three countries then flew to Western Australia and finally home. Adjusting from 10, 9 and the 3-hour differences from Melbourne eventually takes its toll. I'm waiting for solid sleep...

Why do we get jet lagged?
When traveling through time zones, your body is forced to change its circadian/sleeping rhythm. This plays up with your 'normal' sleeping pattern, brain function and digestion. Your body gets confused thinking it should be asleep when you’re now awake or when your body is used to time to digest and detox but instead you are active and eating.

How do you fix it?!
There’s always a part of me that wants to believe in good old sleep and time. However when work, play and life come into the mix you don’t want to wait. There are a few things I use to try to get over jet lag but I’m open to anything that will help:
  • Melatonin Supplement: Melatonin is a hormone which helps to regulate your sleep cycle. Basically taking a supplement helps to top up your Melatonin amount signaling to your body that its time to sleep.
  • Sleeping in time with the City’s Nighttime: If you don't have Melatonin, you can strip it to the basics and stay up and sleep in line with the city you live in. This at times is easier said than done.
  • Hydration & Being Well Fed: Whilst your body adjusts the most you can do is ensure that you are feeding your body well with quality foods and making sure you've had enough water to hydrate. In Europe, I love getting Raspberries and Blueberries to break up all of the Buttery pastry goodness. You can always buy a big 1 or 2 litre water bottle from your local supermarket.
